This self-paced online course was designed to provide foundational knowledge in special education, including historical context, legal frameworks, disability categories, inclusive strategies, assistive technology applications, and behavior management techniques. Applying the ADDIE instructional design model, I developed a structured five-module course, balancing theoretical learning with practical activities.
Each module included multimedia readings, discussions, reflection assignments, and formative assessments. Bloom’s Taxonomy guided the design of learning objectives and activities, targeting cognitive domains from understanding and applying to analyzing key educational strategies.
The course incorporated quizzes to assess comprehension and included reflection prompts to promote critical thinking and personal application of inclusive education strategies.
The course was implemented through Canvas LMS, providing accessible navigation, mobile responsiveness, and learner progress tracking.
By the end of the course, learners are able to:
Summarize the evolution and legal foundations of special education
Identify and describe common disabilities and their educational impacts
Apply inclusive teaching strategies to diverse learning environments
Analyze the role of assistive technology and behavior management in special education settings
